(Exploratory Problem Diagnosis of failing Drain Field.)
The front of the property is seen in the photo above
along with the tree removed from the drain field problem area located in the back yard (seen in the photo below).
In the photo above, the probe rod is being used to locate
and trace the drain field along with the use of the plat (seen in the photos below). The sound of hitting gravel is evident
to the technician as he probes the drain field.
The technician checks the probe rod for the evidence of
water each time that he removes the probe.
He does this because if the drain field is wet in one area
and then dry in another, you can pin point the clog (blockage) and then clean it out.
However in this case, the field lines were traced to the
end and were wet indicating that there was no clog due to the waste water (septic effluent) being present at the end
of the drain field.
The photo belows shows the surfacing of the septic
effluent over the drain field each time the probe rod is removed from the ground > indicating the drain field to be
filled with waste water.
This means that the drain field is not functioning properly
due to most likely excessive bio-mat saturating the soil > rendering the soil unable to absorb the effluent.
One other possible cause is excessive water entering
the system from interior sources such as a leaky toilet (tip>check for high water bills) or exterior sources such as storm
water running into and saturating the drain field.
No evidence of water entering the drain field from other sources was detected.
The photo above shows the exploratory dig into the drain
field and the photo below shows the evidence of water and excessive bio-mat.
The photo above shows the location of the Septic Tank in
the front yard. The Septic Tank is located under the red clay area which was previously uncovered.
Update: 03 June 2010
The Soils Analysis has been conducted and the results have been rendered.
The Property Owner is now considering where to place her new drain field
based on the analysis as well as the lay of the land. She is also considering which Septic Company to use for the installation.
The Diagram (above) shows the layout of the property to
include the major feature locations such as the house, pool, septic tank, etc..
The Diagram (below) shows the results of the soils analysis.
One of the deciding factors to consider when determining the
location of the new drain field is the lay of the land > specifically where the storm water run-off location is or simply
"Where the storm water goes when it rains".
Worst case scenarios like Flash food conditions, such as
when heavy rains occur during times of already saturated soil conditions, are a concern when determining the new
drain field location because over loading the drain field with excessive water (storm water) can cause the drain field to
fail.
